AUTEUR THEORY
Evolved in 1960’s. as a way of categorising films according to directors and the hidden themes in their films.

Case studies:-
John Ford: themes of community and rituals relating to community, etc
Howard Hawks: male groups and the individual within them stoically coping with danger.

An auteur (author) is someone whose body of work has recognisable themes permeating his/her films irrespective of the genre - someone who puts his/her inimitable signature on a film
A metteur en scene is someone who doesn’t add his/her unmistakable signature to a film. Often seen as a technician.

MISE EN SCENE
(putting in the scene): Scenes that have more than one meaning. Notion of ambivalence. For example the dialogue of the scene may indicate one meaning whilst the setting and the way the scene is shot/lit etc indicates a different meaning.

A good free resource is the PDF study guides published by Film Education for school students. They are very informative and offer a good analysis of the film industry and film audience.
